EARLY HISTORY OF MICROSOLAR WATER HEATERS DESIGNED BY MR. TEOH SIANG TEIK 1981-1999
CONCENTRATING TYPE SOLAR WATER HEATER OCTOBER 1981 LADAKH HIMALAYA, INDIA
In the freezing cold of the Ladakh Himalaya, elevation 13,000ft. with winter night time temperature of -30C firewood is precious and kerosene fuel has to be trucked in during the summer months from Kashmir, 2days drive away over dangerous glaciated mountain passes 14,000ft. high.
Dr.Chris Kenyon of England and SOS Children's Villages of France initiated a program for school children to make their own solar water heaters using a design researched by Teoh Siang Teik, at the SOS Tibetan Children's Village, Choglamsar, Leh Ladakh, India.
Early Prototype 1981 shown. This was the first solar water heater in Ladakh that proved capable of operating throughout the winter without freezing.
